Solar energy systems utilise solar energy (sunlight) by using photovoltaic (PV) cells. These PV cells convert sunlight into electricity, providing energy to run domestic appliances – lights, freezer, etc. More importantly, perhaps, sunlight is free. Once you have covered your initial outlay, you will make energy savings every year thereafter.
You will need a strong roof, a south facing roof or wall (within 90 degrees of south). You will also need Planning Permission. *From 1st April 2010 you could be eligible to receive cash for each unit of electricity you generate using this technology
Before installing any renewable energy technology make sure you are using energy as efficiently as possible by taking measures to minimise your energy needs. You’ll then need to use less renewable energy, saving you even more.
